DEFINITION OF PSYCHOSOCIAL TOOLS COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

The comprehensive framework of a cognitive-behavioral weight management program involves
understanding health-related behaviors and modifying those behaviors that are linked to adverse
health effects [38]. Behavioral treatments for pediatric obesity should focus on modifying behaviors
that bear on health and illness. These can involve issues such as improving dietary choices,
decreasing sedentary behaviors, and increasing habitual physical activity and exercise. It is important
to focus on the patient’s attitudes and beliefs about weight loss while building a partnership
with the patient. The physician or health professional should assist the patient in modifying current
behaviors and setting achievable goals. As with other behavior therapies, the patient’s readiness to
change should be assessed and discussed, in addition to identifying potential variables associated
with weight loss. Several concepts should be discussed with the patient, in particular, body image
and unrealistic weight loss expectations. Cognitive-behavioral treatment can also be used to help
overweight children become more assertive in coping with the adverse social stigma of being
overweight. This can not only enhance their self-esteem but also reduce their dissatisfaction with
their body image, regardless of their weight loss [38]. In a recent study, Warschburger et al.
developed and evaluated a cognitive-behavioral training program for obese children and adolescents.
The training program was effective in teaching the children and adolescents ways to manage their
weight status and to deal with associated psychosocial problems [39].
